Do NOT use a DIY website maker before you read this!
Before deciding whether hiring a professional web designer or going down the DIY website builder route, there are certain things you need to consider.
First of all you have to ask yourself; am I serious about this website project and the way it will represent my business? There are tasks in life better when carried out by professionals than an unskilled individual. For example you could repaint your car yourself if you really wanted to but the end result may not be the most pleasing one to the eyes. This is the same issue with your website as well.
Then there are other issues you’ve probably not even thought about. Like what happens to the content of your website, when you decide to move to another service provider? As a matter of fact, free website builders are notorious for making extremely hard to export content. What this means is, that all the hard work you put in building your free website could be going down the drain when you decide to move.
Not only that, your new website wants to be optimized as well in certain ways. Without being too technical here what you need to understand is, search engines like Google and Bing prefers websites that are presented in a certain way. When this optimization is carried out properly your website will appear higher in the search results when your potential customer searches for you. This is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short. SEO capabilities of free website builders score around 0.5 on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best).
The other side of the coin here is that nowadays there are more and more people who search for services on their mobile devices and therefore your site must look good on a mobile device. When someone lands on your website on a mobile device and your site is not readable they will leave with no hesitation. Bad news… you’ve just lost a potential customer and your competition with a mobile optimized website has just gained one.
Again free website builders like Vistaprint and Godaddy are not the greatest for creating mobile optimized websites. This is because the purpose of their free DIY website builder is just to bring in customers for their paid services.
The choice is yours, but in reality DIY is meant for decorating jobs or building a chicken coop for a reason… A complex project like building a website is better left for a professional Web Designer.
